This morning started off with a little more rain. The kids were all up and at breakfast at the appointed time. They took care of a little assignment during breakfast and then it was off to the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Spy Museum, Ford's Theater and Arlington National Cemetery. We had an amazing experience at Arlington today. The changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown was very powerful. The students commented that it was maybe the coolest thing they've seen so far.
An awesome coincidence brought us together with a group of Honor Flight WWII veterans from the Wausau area. Among the men, mostly in wheelchairs, were three with ties to Three Lakes. We took pictures of the kids with the men, and then they spontaneously began shaking hands with the veterans and thanking them for their service to our country. The veterans gifted the kids an ice cream treat and asked them to "pay it forward". There were tears among the adults and looks of amazement on the faces of our 8th graders.
After dinner at King Street Blues in Alexandria, the famous Ghost Tour scared the wits out of us! The students will have some scary stories to share with you once they get home.
